US Whitewater Center in Charlotte: Big Weekend April 25-27

The newly finished US Whitewater Center in Charlotte plays host, today through Sunday, to a bevy of international racers. Details are here, but the competitions include the US Olympic Trials, as well as The Pan Am Championships and Olympic Qualifier.

Charlotte is an easy 2.5 hour drive from Asheville, and the events offer a chance to see world class athletes that is rare for most of us. The "riverbed" is man made, with the water being diverted from The Catawba River. The blog Rivers and Creeks has a nice photo gallery.

And below, a video, 1 min and 56 seconds of what a very smooth run in this exciting, but somewhat obscure Olympic competition looks like.

ENJOY

Baby Boomer Thursdays: 75th Anniversary of The Drive-In Movie

NPR ran a story a few days ago marking not only the 75th anniversary of the drive in movie, but indicated that this classic bit of Americana might well be experiencing a resurgence.

Variety, the Hollywood show biz daily chimes in as well with a story on the comeback of the drive in. What baby boomer does not have memories of drive in theaters, from childhood into our teenage years? Great to see they might not be dead yet.

Asheville Things To Do: Jerry's Baddle

Today, April 19, why not take a drive and see some of the top flight whitewater, biking, and scenery for which Asheville is known?

Mountain Express provides details of a paddle and peddle race to be held near Saluda today, in and around the famed Green River Narrows, a truly world class steep creek. American Whitewater provides driving directions.

The race is the 3rd annual "Jerry's Baddle", and is named for long time local kayaker Jerry Beckwith. Proceeds benefit ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, which claimed Jerry's life two years ago yesterday. The Green River Access Fund also benefits from the event.

That's Jerry at the right.

Here's a short video of last year's event, 3 minutes 30 second, ENJOY

New Video Promotes Asheville and Western NC Tourism

The Asheville Citizen Times reports today on a "new, unconventional" video that was produced in order to promote Asheville and the mountains in the UK.

Without further ado, here is:
"Appalachia comin’ 'atcha"
....a seven-minute video that blends the beat of Cherokee drums and contemporary hip-hop, showing the range of cultures blending in Asheville from Shindig on the Green to the Friday night drum circles in Pritchard Park.
We've always referred to Asheville as the "hip, artsy, and eclectic cultural hub of the region". This video does a good job capturing the spirit of Ashevegas, and its environs.

ENJOY !

Have a great weekend, and thanks for stopping by,

Asheville: The Orange Peel Makes Rolling Stone's Top Five in America

We have often written about Asheville as the hip, artsy, and eclectic cultural hub of the region. Whether it be culinary delights, art galleries, or even beer and a great "walkability score", we like downtown Ashevegas.

A vibrant live music scene is one of downtown's best features, and has been recognized as such nationally. On Friday, April 18, Rolling Stone Magazine will publish its "Best of Rock" issue and has named The Orange Peel Social Aid and Pleasure Club as one of the top 5 rock venues in the country.

The Orange Peel has played host to everyone from Bob Dylan to the Indigo Girls, and has been a cornerstone of downtown nightlife and live music since reopening five years ago. Well done.

Ashevegas has more information and links.

Supply, Demand, and Emotion

Barbara Corcoran has a post up entitled "The Ten Best Ways to Lose Your Buyer", but the most enlightening portion in the video below from The Today Show, on NBC. The film clip is 5minutes and 57 seconds of lucidity with respect to the housing market, and goes right to the heart of supply and demand.

The Salient Points:
1) The market is grossly oversupplied.
2) Total home sales are off by 30%, yet prices are down only around 10%, and inventories grow each month.
3) Sellers continue to resist any ideas of dropping prices resulting in a kind of long term stand off.
4) The clip closes with some solid ideas for sellers from negotiation to open houses and setting the price.

Most Quotable Quote:
"You can sell any house in any market, no matter what's going on provided your price is low enough".

Baby Boomer Thursdays: Trading Stamps

Thursday is baby boomer fun day, no real estate, so here goes....

Trading stamps were part and parcel of growing up in the 1950's and 1960's, though the idea dates back to the late 19th century. Gasoline stations and grocery stores dispensed them on a regular basis, and prominently advertised such enticements.

Some of the big names in trading stamps across the country included, S and H Green Stamps, Top Value Stamps, and Plaid Stamps, a program of The A & P. Most towns had a redemption center, ours had a couple of them. Flickr has quite a few vintage images.

Long gone, and long since replaced by such things as credit card loyalty programs, and frequent flier miles. Bob Cox's Yesteryear has a nice little article and photos. Here are some of the gifts that could be redeemed from the S & H Ideabook, and the number of books of stamps required:
Pair of bookends (1), Baldwin piano (380), Singer sewing machine (35), week’s vacation in Hawaii (190), pair of Speed King roller skates (1), Kodak Hawkeye camera (5½) and a Wollensak reel-to-reel tape recorder (43)
Let's finish with a 30 second commercial form IGA, a regional grocery chain in the northeast that featured Green Stamps.

Pending Home Sales Reach Record Low in February 2008

The forward looking Pending Home Sales Index, (PHSI), is the last piece of basic data released for any given month. The Business Week Real Estate Blog, informs us that it declined 21.4% from a year ago and represents the lowest level since the index began.

Paper Economy does its usual regional breakdown showing us that no area of the country escaped the trend, and that in the South, the PHSI dropped more than 30% from last year. This was the biggest decline in the country. Interest Rate Roundup provides added comments and a nice graph.

The Big Picture examines the numbers, and wonders how it is that the press release from the national trade association can call a 21% drop, "stability", while Paper Economy lays out the track record since December, 2006 for our trade group. Sadly, it's just not so good when it comes to providing legitimate info for buyers and sellers.

We've been bearish on housing for over a year now, but one really begins to wonder at this point, for how many more months will we see new lows in all of the basic numbers? Yes, it's a buyers' market, but at what price level?

Asheville: Guide to Fishing the Mountains

Trout season opened in 25 Western counties of North Carolina this past Saturday. The Asheville Citizen Times noted the occasion with this photo show from The Rocky Broad River.

Many sources reported about the impact of the drought on the manner in which the NC Wildlife Resources Commission will stock streams this year. In short, hatchery yields were down, and a greater percentage of trout will be stocked in the springtime this year, instead of over a whole season, including the summer.

Folks planning a fishing trip should check out our previous article on what the drought means for fishing, sportsmanship, and etiquette. Be aware, be fair, and give the fish a chance.

Baby Boomer Thursdays: Marlon Brando

This week's installment, rather than look at music or TV, let's note the birthday of the late Marlon Brando, 1924 - 2004.

Brando's filmography shows his impact on our generation, from A Streetcar Named Desire in 1951, to On The Waterfront, The Godfather Trilogy, and Apocalypse Now, one of the first Viet Nam War movies. He was a bona fide cultural icon over the course of decades.

Asheville Citizen Times: Mountain Travel Guide 2008

The Asheville Citizen Times recently published its 2008 Mountain Travel Guide. We have covered a number of the annual events and some of the attractions on that page individually, but this looks like a decent "all in one place" kind of resource.

Readers there will find a healthy sampling of venues, from food, to live music, art galleries, outdoor outfitters, festivals and more. Hopefully, that page will not disappear.

In that event, please feel free to visit our website section on Area Life and Links, which has many pages of area information about life here. Topics range from schools and local government to health care and night life.

Can Marilyn Monroe Sell Your House Now?

The Wall Street Journal Real Esate section informs us of a court decision involving images and license fees for Marilyn Monroe LLC whereby marketers may be:
...free to use her image without paying licensing fees to her estate because of a difference between California and New York state laws.
What does this have to do with real estate one may ask?

We wrote some time ago about some off the beaten path ideas for sellers. One we did not mention, but which has been around, is the notion to "drop a dead celebrity in your home".

Frequent TV commenter Barbara Corcoran may be the person who popularized this tactic. Specifically, the thrust is to make a listing stand out, to be creative.

Barbara had once suggested, to photoshop a celebrity, like Marilyn, into that photo of the living room for a really eye catching listing. Seems like that may be approaching legality just in time for summer.
