No getting around it, modern log homes, (no longer called "cabins"), are certainly the rage in some quarters. Around Asheville, with the mountainous, wooded terrain, the ambiance is well suited, so the demand is there. Today, we will provide a modest set of resources to help make the decision to buy or build a log home, a bit more informed.
Technology has changed, and these homes are no longer the adorable but drafty abodes of the past. They are modern, spacious, and cutting edge, see for example:
Log Home Myths: From "The Log Home Advisor" Website, which briefly looks at a number of items from financing to engineering, to thermal efficiencies in log homes.
Log Home Links: Covers a multitude of topics with outbound links about such things as, type of wood, floor plans, cost comparisons, and "The 10 Biggest Mistakes".
Tips on Designing and Avoiding Troubles: From The Natural Handyman, thoughts about the design and building of closets, kitchens, plumbing, wiring, and more.
Evaluating Designs: More from The Log Home Advisor including, topography, terrain, roofs, and the buyers' vision for the home's purpose.
Log Home Ideas: Everything from solar and living "off the grid", to lighting, furniture, and decorating ideas.

The NY Times, (registration likely required), has a nice overview here and background on assembling and kits, from Amy Gunderson, second home specialist at The Times, often cited by our blog.
And, lest we forget, the necessary evil of upkeep:
Log Home Maintenance: Brief topics for thought.
More thoughts and resources on maintaining one's homes in Asheville's mountains can be found in our Buyers' Archive, or Tips For Mountain Homeowners. Links are just below the signature to this posting.
